Whether you are planning to dress up as a character from your new favorite movie or disguise yourself as the classic Halloween witch or ghost, there is one thing about this upcoming week that most are looking forward to… enjoying their favorite Halloween treats. With the holiday only days away, bags of candy are flying off the shelves of stores, waiting to make their way into the pillowcases of trick-or-treaters. During this time of year Halloween candy is everywhere you turn making it hard to resist temptation, after all a ghost on the skittles wrapper seem to make them taste sweeter and Reese’s just taste more delicious in the shape of a pumpkin!
The truth is this holiday only rolls around once a year so if you want to treat yourself to a few pieces of your favorite candy you should enjoy it! It is pretty well known that candy is never a healthy option, but by being aware of the tricks that may lie within your treats you can become familiar with candy options that may be a little less unhealthy and you might even enjoy some of your favorite candies a little bit more.
* To control the amount of candy you eat try to stick to fun-size candy bars. As a little kid I never understood what was so “fun” about a fun-size candy bar- they were so small! But these bite-size pieces are all you really need to satisfy your craving and they are a great way to enjoy a Halloween treat and not take in too many extra calories.
* While they may not be as good for your teeth, sugary fruity candies tend to contain less calories and fat than chocolates do. For example, 1 small fun-sized Hershey Bar contains almost 4 grams of fat, while a small fun size Twizzeler contains less than 1 gram!
The important thing to remember when enjoying a treat like Halloween candy is to eat enough to enjoy and satisfy your craving, not to eat so much that you feel sick. Enjoy your Halloween and beware of ghosts, zombies, witches, and your Halloween treats!
